Uplifting and Impactful Project Earns Pacific Corrugated Pipe Company “Project of the Year” Award
The Plastic Pipe Institute (PPI), our industries major plastic trade association, recently awarded Pacific Corrugated Pipe Company one of their most coveted awards- the 2020 Project of the Year. What makes this years award-winning project so meaningful is because it had such a strong community impact; and it was the lone project to receive an award in the “Drainage Division” of PPI.
This year’s award-winning project overcame several challenges and ultimately led to a successful and truly meaningful installation of high-density polyethylene corrugated plastic pipe. The primary purpose of this HDPE pipe was to supply drainage to a new set of soccer fields. However, these were not just any soccer fields. These fields were located in Camp Marie, Haiti. Also, the soccer players were not just any players, they were youth from a very underprivileged and underserved area of Haiti. Eventually, these fields would be a cornerstone to an entire community planned for this area.
The location provided a challenge due to the remoteness of the property. In fact, if not for the great people at “Project Living Hope”, this project would not have happened. It required that shipping containers be sent from Haiti to our facility in Hubbard, Oregon. Then, as soon as the containers were loaded, they were transferred, by ship, to Haiti then trailered to Camp Marie, Haiti.
Due to the remoteness of the location, it was vital that our solution be easy to handle and effortless to install. Also, since the site had limited heavy-duty equipment, the lightweight attribute of our HDPE pipe was critical. So, with the assistance of a small Caterpillar excavator, a couple dump trucks and brute human strength and will, the project was quickly competed. The only thing left to do was to find some players, grab some cleats and throw out a soccer ball…let the games begin!
Working with charitable organizations is generally not a profitable endeavor as it relates to monetary rewards. However, what the “Project Living Hope” limited in revenues, it more than made up in delivering hope and joy. Ultimately, it was one our most meaningful and community-supportive projects in our company’s history.
